With its exciting acrobatic performances, splendid cultural shows, and exploration of profound and far-reaching culture of Lao Tzu, the gala guarantees to present a feast of agility, flexibility and joy.

Award-Winning Acrobatic Shows Compete for Glam and Glory

Horseback riding, music reverberating, acrobats flexing, rolling and swings in the air…A dozen of top acrobatic teams from all over the country bring 15 shows, including Dream into Brilliant Chess Tactics, Thousands of Horses Are Galloping, Set Sail for Dreams, The Spirit of Warrior, and Dandelions Fluttering over the Sky, aiming to demonstrate the progress of acrobatics and communicate its unique charm. Acrobatic skills such as trampolining, horsemanship, balancing, and tightrope walking take the stage in turn to bring the house down. The program has both aerial and on-stage shows, highlighting the diversity of Chinese acrobatics, incorporating an array of acrobatic genres, and presenting a cheerful acrobatic carnival.

Every detail of the gala reflects the ingenuity of the production team in making a bold collage of creativity, such as ground-breaking prowess, innovative form of presentation, demonstration of the spirit of the new era, and the unification of strength and beauty, technique and artistry in acrobatics. Set Sail for Dreams creatively introduces the swing-boat into acrobatics to celebrate the Chinese ethos of braving winds and waves. The Spirit of Warrior is a great act combing the skills of balance with visual effect, which tells a passionate story about the army. The show Thousands of Horses Are Galloping weds horsemanship, guzheng, suona and the Mongolian throat singing, paying homage to the unrestrained, majestic vibrancy of the grasslands. With the help of AR technology, Dandelions Fluttering over the Sky brings together dance and umbrella kick and roll, painting a beautiful picture of white dandelions drifting up in the sky.

Opera, Chinese Chess and Lao Tzu-themed Shows Display a Wealth of Cultural Connotations

Acrobatics is a challenge to both physical strength and skills, but more importantly, it’s the art of showcasing and accomplishing “beauty” through the performance. While communicating the philosophy of “beauty”, the program also enriches the cultural connotations of traditional Chinese culture.

Inspired by Lao Tzu and Taoist culture of Zhoukou, The Greatest Virtue Is like Water counts the enlightenment of this ancient Chinese philosopher. Balance beam gymnastics and trampolining are brought in to illustrate his journey from seeking, reflection and the realizing of Tao, interpreting the concept “The Greatest Virtue Is like Water” in Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching (The Classic of the Virtue of the Tao) in an innovative way. Dream into Brilliant Chess Tactics features drum kick and roll, a technique of traditional Chinese acrobatics, to further capture the philosophy and cultural essence of Chinese chess and bring the chess pieces to life. The Years of Opera Makeup is a marriage between balancing and traditional Chinese opera, which draws a beautiful, romantic and moving picture of Chinese aesthetics.

With new means, new expression and new technique, the gala revisits the excellent traditional cultural emblems of the Chinese people, such as opera, chess and Lao Tzu. When honoring the skills of acrobats, Inspiring Strivers and Chase a Dream of Space also interpret the spirit of the new era, such as unity, endeavor, exploration and blazing new trails, in a context that goes beyond figurative expression.

New Interpretation of Lao Tzu Culture in Zhoukou, the Home of Acrobatics

“Amazing Henan is where China Began” the 2023 Chinese Acrobatics Gala takes its stage to Zhoukou to showcase the charm of acrobatics and decode the profound culture of Lao Tzu.

According to Qian Linlin, chief director of the gala, all the shows are recommended by China Acrobats Association, with many of them winning the gold medal at the China Acrobatic Golden Chrysanthemum Awards Competition and awards at international acrobatics competitions. Among these award-winning acts, Thousands of Horses Are Galloping and Flying Trapeze presented by Zhoukou Jingui Performing Arts Group are the grand finale of the gala.

While carrying forward the excellent Chinese culture, showcasing the unique charm of Chinese acrobatics, and decoding the mysteries of acrobatic shows, the 2023 Chinese Acrobatics Gala is guaranteed to bring entertainment and joy to the world.
